What up Stic how are things going?

THINGS ARE AWESOME,  I’M IN THE FLOW, BEING PRODUCTIVE, APPLYING A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO MY LIFE AND ENDEAVORS AS BEST I CAN IN THIS MOMENT. NEW MUSIC IS OUT, TRAVELING, MY FAMILY IS WELL AND I’M THANKFUL TO BE IN THE GOOD FIGHT AND WINNING VICTORIES ALONG THE WAY.

You released your second solo album “The Workout” this year, how has the reception been to it?

TRULY IT HAS BEEN WELL RECEIVED! “THE WORKOUT” HAS BEEN ON THE TOP OF THE TOP 100 ITUNES FITNESS CHARTS SINCE IT DEBUTED AT #1 THE WEEK OF APRIL 12TH 2011 AND WE HAVE BEEN HAVING GREAT FEEDBACK EVER SINCE.

BUT EVEN MORE IMPORTANT THAN THAT HAS BEEN THE NUMEROUS EMAILS, TEXTS, POSTS, AND CALLS I HAVE RECEIVED FROM ALL TYPES OF FOLKS WHO HAVE GOTTEN BACK ON THEIR EXERCISE AND TRAINING REGIMENS, OR STARTED FOR THE FIRST TIME OR STOPPED SMOKING CIGARETTES, WHO HAVE BECOME VEGETARIANS, WHO HAVE SIGNED UP FOR MARATHONS, WHO HAVE JUST MADE GREAT STRIDES IN THEIR COMMITMENTS TO BEING HEALTHIER AND TAKING CARE OF THEM SELVES AND THEIR CONFIDENCE IS UP, THANKING ME FOR THE MOTIVATION AND EXAMPLE OF THE WORKOUT.

MANY PEOPLE HAVE EXPRESSED THAT THEY FEEL THE ALBUM IS A CLASSIC, THAT IT’S INSPIRING BEYOND JUST WORKING OUT BUT FOR LIFE IN GENERAL. THE FACT THAT IT HAS NO CURSE WORDS OR N WORDS HAS BEEN A REAL PLUS IN PEOPLE’S FEEDBACK AS WELL.  CHURCH FOLK, KIDS, WHITE, BLACK, ASIAN, ATHLETES AND FOLKS WHO WEREN’T EVEN INTO FITNESS ALL HAVE BEEN IN SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT HAS BEEN THE COMMON SENTIMENT I HAVE RECEIVED. AND THE  RBG FIT CLUB MESSAGE IS GETTING OUT THERE AND THE CDS ARE SELLING REALLY, REALLY WELL. . I’VE BEEN CONTACTED BY PERSONAL TRAINERS IN THE US AND INTERNATIONALLY WHO SAY THE ALBUM IS HAVING A GREAT EFFECT ON THEIR CLIENTS’ MOTIVATION.   I HAVE BEEN STRENGTHENED EVEN MORE IN MY OWN PERSONAL DEDICATION BY LISTENING TO THE ALBUM WHEN I TRAIN.  IT HAS TRULY BEEN A PHENOMENAL .

You have been rapping about being healthy since Dead Prez’s first album with the track “be healthy” and throughout your other Dead Prez albums and now with your new solo album, why is discussing health so important in your music?

IT’S A UNIVERSAL PATTERN THAT HAS BEEN RECURRENT IN MY PERSONAL LIFE SO IT NATURALLY FINDS ITS WAY IN MY FLOWS AND VERSES AND THEMES. I’VE DEALT WITH GOUT, I’VE BEEN A VEGAN MANY YEARS, MEMBERS OF MY FAMILY AND ME DEALING WITH SUBSTANCE ABUSE.

MANY YEARS OF MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING, HAVING MY SON AT HOME NATURALLY WITHOUT DOCTORS AND MEDICINE, HELPING MY MOM GET OFF INSULIN AS A DIABETIC, MY FATHER HAVING 2 HEART ATTACKS, ETC.

SO MANY FACTORS IN MY LIFE HAVE KEPT HEALTH AT THE FOREFRONT OF MY CONSCIOUSNESS AND I FEEL I HAVE A CALLING TO MAKE A LOVING IMPACT IN THIS AREA THROUGH MY MUSIC AND OTHER INITIATIVES I AM A PART OF.

I THINK THROUGH A HEALTH AND FITNESS LIFESTYLE WE CAN ADDRESS MANY OTHER ISSUES AND OFFER HEALING. MORE CONFIDENCE, LESS DISEASES AND ILLNESSES, RESISTANCE TO DRUGS AND ADDICTION, SELF DEFENSE.

SO MUCH POSITIVE AND GOOD COMES OUT OF HEALTH AND FITNESS LIFESTYLE AND WE DON’T HAVE TO WAIT ON ARMAGEDDON OR JESUS OR THE REVOLUTION OR ANYTHING ELSE (LOL) TO JUMP RIGHT IN AND GET THE BENEFITS. WE JUST NEED THE MOTIVATION AND DISCIPLINE TO CLAIM THE VICTORY,  A HEALTHY LIFE.

What is your philosophy in regards to food and nutrition, for example are you a vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, etc.?

I’M BASICALLY A VEGAN BUT I HAVE ADDED CERTAIN FISH TO MY DIET ON OCCASION. I DON’T DRINK ALCOHOL OR SMOKE ANYTHING, NO WEED CIGARETTES ETC. NO SODAS, NO PROCESSED WHITE OR BROWN SUGAR, NO ARTIFICIAL COLORS OR PRESERVATIVES, JUST NATURAL WHOLE FOOD AND ORGANIC WHENEVER IT’S AVAILABLE.

I ALWAYS LIKE TO TEST MY OWN THEORIES AND NOT GET TOO CAUGHT UP IN LABELS AND TITLES.  BUT MAKE SURE I’M FEELING MY BEST AND GETTING THE RIGHT NUTRIENTS I NEED TO REACH MY FITNESS GOALS.

I THINK GOOD LITERATURE TO FURTHER YOUR STUDIES ARE “THE CHINA STUDY” BY T.COLIN CAMPBELL AND “THE VEGAN SOULFOOD GUIDE TO THE GALAXY.”

I THINK THAT THE VEGETARIAN/VEGAN LIFESTYLE IS THE MOST ETHICAL, MOST ECONOMICAL AND MOST WISE LIFESTYLE BASED OFF MY RESEARCH.  PEOPLE SHOULD BE INFORMED AND DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES.  I FEEL NUTRITION IS ABOUT BALANCE; NOT EXTREMISM.

Stic, in your opinion is it essential to remove meat from your diet in order to be healthy, is there an alternative for those who want to continue eating meat but be healthy at the same time?

MEAT CONSUMPTION, SPECIFICALLY RED MEAT, CHICKEN ETC. HAS BEEN INDICATED IN THE INITIAL DEVELOPMENT OF CANCER IN THE BODY. IT HAS BEEN PROVEN THAT THE ANIMAL PROTEIN THAT WE CONSUME IS THE CATALYST FOR CANCER CELLS TO FLOURISH IN OUR BODIES.

I WOULD AGAIN STRESS GETTING THE BOOK “THE CHINA STUDY” AND IF YOU STILL WANNA EAT MEAT, THEN U CAN’T SAY U AIN’T BEEN WARNED.

THE MEAT INDUSTRY HAS PAID FOR ITS PLACE ON THE FDA’S RECOMMENDED FOODS LIST.  IT HAS BOUGHT ITS WAY INTO THE SCHOOLS AS PART OF A BALANCED DIET AND PAID THE GOVERNMENT OFF.

WE CAN GET ALL OUR PROTEIN NEEDS FROM VEGETABLE SOURCES, EVEN B12 FROM CHIA SEEDS AND SEAWEEDS ETC. BUT THE MEAT INDUSTRY HAS FUNDED ITS OWN TRICKNOLOGY MARKETING AND BIASED RESEARCH TO VALIDATE FALSE CLAIMS OF THE AMOUNT OF PROTEIN WE NEED DAILY FROM ANIMAL SOURCES TO FATTEN UP ITS POCKETS.

BUT AS YOU SEE THE OBESITY RATES AND HEART DISEASE IN THE WORLD, THE U.S. IN PARTICULAR, IT NOT ONLY FATTENS UP ITS POCKETS BUT ALSO THE NATION.  AND PEOPLE ARE SICKER THAN EVER BECAUSE OF IT.  MCDONALDS IS CRACK DONALDS AND BURGER KING IS MURDER KING, LOL.

REALLY DEPENDS ON OUR SCHEDULE, AND MY GOALS AS FAR AS FITNESS, WEIGHT ETC. MY GOALS PLAY A BIG ROLE IN MY DIET.

BUT THAT’S SOME STUFF OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD.

Two of the videos you released for The Workout album so far BACK ON MY REGIMEN & RUNNER’S HIGH are about hitting the gym and running,  what is your daily workout regimen and how important is physical activity in maintaining a healthy body?

THIS IS TYPICAL FOR ME BUT I OFTEN CHANGE MY ROUTINE TO NOT GET BORED.

I MEDITATE AS SOON AS I WAKE UP, EVERY OTHER DAY I RUN (AT THIS POINT I’M UP TO 6-7 MILES EVERY OTHER DAY). DO YOGA, STRETCHING AND BREATHING ON SUNDAYS AND SOME NON-RUNNING DAYS, AS WELL AS CALISTHENICS SUCH AS PULL UPS, PUSH UPS, SHADOW BOXING, CRUNCHES, SQUATS ,ETC AND I USE DUMBBELLS AND BARBELLS FOR TONING.

I ALSO DO BOXING WITH MY SON AT THE GYM  SPEED BAG, HEAVY BAG, JUMP ROPE, PADS, SIT UPS, FOOTWORK DRILLS, STANDARD BOXING STUFF LIKE THAT.

I ALSO LIKE TO SPAR WHEN THERE’S A PARTNER AVAILABLE AND I PRACTICE VARIOUS MARTIAL TECHNIQUES IVE ACQUIRED OVER THE YEARS.

Many people complain of lack of motivation, what motivates you to workout and eat healthy?

IT’S FUN. I SEE MYSELF AS A WARRIOR. IT’S THE WAY I STAY READY. I’M THE MAN OF MY HOUSE. I SEE IT AS PART OF MY DUTIES AS A PERSON, AS A FATHER, AND AS A MAN. AS A COMMUNITY MEMBER. I KNOW I HAVE TO BE AN EXAMPLE WHEN THERE IS NO MOTIVATION. IT’S NEEDED. I KNOW I MUST PLAY MY ROLE TO HELP BREAK THE CYCLE.

ALSO, THE ENDORPHINS MOTIVATE ME. SEEING MY GUT START TO DEVELOP TOO MUCH MOTIVATES ME, LOL, MY PRIDE IN MYSELF. IT DEFEATS STRESS. IT GIVES ME AN EXHILARATING FEELING OF SELF RESPECT AND ACCOMPLISHMENT. IT KEEPS ME FROM RELAPSING BACK TO BEING A WEED HEAD, LOL.

I FEEL GOOD WHEN I DO WORKOUT AND EAT RIGHT. I FEEL LAZY AND I HAVE HEALTH ISSUES WHEN I SLACK. SO IT’S JUST MY LIFESTYLE AT THIS POINT. TO NOT TRAIN FOR ME IS LIKE ME NOT MAKING MUSIC, NOT GONNA BE ABLE TO DO IT, LOL.

Do you feel that detox diets such as the master cleanse are safe, the reason I ask is because many people have done it to lose weight in a short period of time, is that the proper way to lose weight?

I SAY IF YOU HAVE A BALANCED ACTIVE HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CENTERED IN WHOLEFOOD NUTRITION, YOU WILL FIND YOUR BODY’S NATURAL HEALTHY WEIGHT.

DON’T SWEAT THE SCALE; SWEAT IN THE WORKOUT.  IT HAS TO BE A LIFESTYLE TO BE SUSTAINABLE. THEM FAD DIETS AND GET SLIM OR SWOLE QUICK TRICKS DON’T LAST.

A BALANCED LIFESTYLE THAT YOU ENJOY WILL KEEP U CONSISTENT AND THIS IS WHAT’S BEST IN THE LONG RUN. YOU HAVE TO FIND THE ACTIVITIES THAT BUILD YOUR STRENGTH FLEXIBILITY AND ENDURANCE THAT ARE FUN FOR YOU AND JOYFUL. SURE THERE IS EFFORT INVOLVED AND YOU MAY HAVE TO OVERCOME A BIT OF LAZINESS OR MENTAL BLOCKS BUT ONCE YOU ARE CONSISTENT THE RESULTS AND THEM ENDORPHINS WILL KEEP YOU COMING BACK.

ALSO REMEMBER, IF YOU BECOME INACTIVE OVER PERIODS OF TIME AS YOU AGE IT WILL BE THAT MUCH HARDER TO MAINTAIN YOUR STRENGTH FLEXIBILITY AND ENDURANCE. OLD AGE DOESN’T HAVE TO BE RIDDLED WITH POOR HEALTH IF WE LIVE NOW WITH THE END IN MIND.

What is the most challenging aspect of leading this lifestyle?  What are some hardships you have faced?  Do you get cravings for things you have given up and how do you deal with it?

YOU HAVE TO FACE YOUR SELF AND BE DETERMINED. THIS IS THE SECRET TO LIFE. YOUR GREATEST ENEMY IS YOUR OWN MIND UNTIL YOU KNOW YOUR TRUE POTENTIAL. OUR DOUBT, OUR TENDENCY TO SETTLE FOR MEDIOCRITY, OUR FEAR OF FAILURE, OUR FEAR OF SUCCESS, OF PAIN, OF THE UNKNOWN. THIS IS WHAT GETS IN OUR WAY.

IT’S BEEN MY CONSISTENCY THAT HAS BEEN MY GREATEST ASSET. I JUST KEEP AT IT. I VARY MY ROUTINE WHEN MY INTERESTS SHIFT, BUT I KEEP ACTIVE. I SURROUND MY SELF WITH INFORMATION AND THINGS THAT ARE INSPIRATIONAL. I STAY AWAY FROM NEGATIVE THINKERS AS BEST I CAN. I WATCH WHAT I INTAKE MENTALLY AND STRIVE TO FEED MY SELF POSITIVE ENCOURAGEMENT ALL DAY EVERYDAY.

I THINK OF WHAT I USED TO BE DOING AND HOW I WAS  FEELING ABUSING AND NEGLECTING MY HEALTH AND I APPRECIATE MY LIFESTYLE TODAY EVEN MORE.  I THINK ABOUT MY FAMILY MEMBERS ADDICTED TO COCAINE AND OTHER DRUGS AND MANY PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITIES SO SICK THEY ARE ON MACHINES AND HEAVY MEDICATION AND I SAY I’M NOT GONNA LET THAT HAPPEN TO ME BECAUSE OF MY OWN NEGLIGENCE! AND I’M INSPIRED TO KEEP GOING.  AND IT JUST FEELS GOOD TO FEEL GOOD YA DIG? LOL

What are the benefits of healthy living?  How have you benefited?

I’M HAPPIER, MORE AT PEACE, MORE IN TUNE WITH MY DIRECTION, MORE ATTENTIVE TO MY FAMILY, MORE ASSERTIVE IN MY BUSINESS, MORE PRODUCTIVE CREATIVELY, MORE ACCOUNTABLE TO MY VALUES, MORE USEFUL TO MY COMMUNITY, MORE STRONGER, MORE SEXIER AND MORE POWERFUL.

Who and what has influenced you to be healthy? What books or resources do you recommend to those who want to improve their health?

MY PARENTS ILL HEALTH, MY BROTHER’S DRUG ABUSE, MY OWN HEALTH ISSUES WITH GOUT AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE, MALCOLM X’S AUTO BIOGRAPHY, MARTIAL ARTS IN GENERAL AND IN PARTICULAR BRUCE LEE’S JKD PHILOSOPHY AND MARTIAL ARTS CONCEPTS, WHICH I HAVE BEEN A STUDENT OF FOR MANY YEARS, QUEEN AFUA AND HER PHILOSOPHY ON SELF HEALING THROUGH NUTRITION, MY WIFE’S COMARADERY AND SUPPORT WHO HAPPENS TO BE A HOLISTIC HEALTH COUNSELOR AND AUTHOR OF THE VEGAN SOULFOOD GUIDE TO THE GALAXY AND MUCH MORE CONTINUOUS LEARNING.

After reading this interview, what is the most important change or step a person can make or take today to begin a path of health and wellness?

I PUT OUT THE WORKOUT AND FOUNDED THE RBG FIT CLUB TO HELP MOTIVATE OTHERS TO COME TO THE REALIZATION THAT EITHER WE GET ACTIVE NOW AND REAP THE BENEFITS, OR LATER AS WE AGE WE ARE GUNNA END UP SUFFERING THE CONSEQUENCES; IF WE LIVE TIL LATER. IT’S THAT REAL.  IT’S POSSIBLE.  IT’S FUN. IT’S WORTH IT.  IT’S NOT A COMPETITION.  IT’S AN INVESTMENT IN THE QUALITY OF YOUR OWN LIFE AND THE COMMUNITY THAT YOU LOVE.
